One of the most well known black-belt tests is board breaking, when one “karate chops” through a block of wood with his bare hand. Though it seems an outwardly aggressive thing to do, it holds an important place in the practice. Most martial arts training is done through sparring with a partner. Because you are emulating a fight, though not actually making contact, how do you know that you are capable of using enough force to injure?Block breaking is a great check for force and form. If you are able to break the standard 1 square foot, 3/4″ thick board, you are capable of breaking an adult human forearm.

Though previously mentioned as a black-belt test, people of all skill level can karate breaking boards, though it is less common in lower belt classes.Here’s how to do it:Before the big day: Train your skin, muscles, and bones to accept pain. Injuries, once healed, strengthen the body. This does not mean break your hand hitting everything you come across. Rather, it is comparable to a bodybuilder: small tears occur in the muscles from the immediate strain of lifting, then the lifter rests a day or two for the muscles to heal and grow.
